High Growth Expected in Cloud-based Wireless Telecom Solutions

Cloud-managed wireless is growing at a swifter pace than the wireless LAN (WLAN) market as a whole. According to a study research company IDC conducted in April 2014, the cloud-managed WLAN market is expected to reach $2.5 billion by 2018 – a 38.8% compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) between 2013 and 2018. On the other hand, the CAGR forecast for the overall WLAN market over the same period is just 11%.

What’s driving the adoption of cloud-based wireless telecom solutions? IDC believes growth is being fueled by small- to medium-sized businesses looking for a more affordable, feature-rich and simplified solution. In particular, retail companies and K-12 educational institutions have moved most aggressively to cloud-managed WLANs.

The move to a service provider’s managed WLAN solution is very straightforward. Since the solution is managed by a service provider, you don’t have to purchase a lot of equipment. Investment shifts from a capital expense to a more predictable subscription-based operating expense.

A hosted model can keep your WLAN upgraded and remove the fear of your solution becoming technologically obsolete – all service upgrades via firmware through the cloud.

By upgrading to cloud wireless telecom solutions, businesses can better implement BYOD (bring your own device) strategies. They can also scale their wireless network solution as needed without expensive upgrades. And they can free their IT staff from network operations, support and security management. Cloud WLANs have also grown in functionality to provide the same feature sets in the cloud that were available on-premises.
